Make a difference in small ways

JW Way Fundamental #12:  Make a Difference
"Play an active roll in supporting our community and those less fortunate by contributing time, money, and expertise to enrich the lives of others and improve our community. We can and do make a difference."

Making a difference means to go out, help somebody, and make a positive change in their life.  I view making a difference to include the simple things you do that positively impact people around you each day.   Making a difference is lifting the mood of someone else by letting them know they are appreciated. When I am grocery shopping, I’ll ask the cashier how their day is going and thank the bagger for bagging my groceries. It doesn’t matter if it is his or her job or not.  This small kindness, lifts their mood and helps them make a difference to people around them. I like to think of it as the trickle effect of spreading kindness.  How about returning the grocery cart to the cart rack rather than leaving it in the parking lot?   Yes, it’s a simple act!  One less cart to wrangle up and I’m sure that the person who has to retrieve them in 105-degree weather appreciates that.  And, you get a few more steps in for the day.  It’s a classic win-win!

Recently I was at the gym and had everything in place to start my group fitness workout including my lifting bar, weights, bench and mat.   The music was loud and we were all warming up for a rocking workout.  A person arrived late and came rushing in, scrambling to get their equipment set up.  I offered helping hand, and quickly helped them get some equipment. It only took a few seconds for me to help. And that act of kindness made a difference for everyone in the class.  My hope was to plant a seed for others to pay it forward.

There are many simple things you can do to make a positive effect in someone’s everyday life.  There are also ways to truly help someone in need and make a positive change in their life. Opportunities to volunteer with a charity by offering either your time or donation.  I like to volunteer in the child care center at my local church. I have learned that it’s a workout too! The next time you have an opportunity to make a difference, take advantage of the opportunity and just do it!
