Our family law department has an additional secret weapon at its disposal – our firm’s experienced appellate department, including Kathi Sandweiss. Kathi has over 35 years as an appellate advocate, with a breadth of experience in complex family law appeals. She has handled appeals and special actions arising out of termination of parental rights, parenting time, custody and child support issues, high stake and complex marital communities, and valuation of businesses.
Kathi brings her understanding of complex business litigation and appeals to the area of family law appeals involving finances, investments, real property and accounting practices. Her recent successful family law appellate decisions include dismissal of a spouse’s petition for dissolution of marriage where the other spouse’s petition was pending in another jurisdiction; characterization of annuity interest as not included in gross income for purposes of a child support award; contempt for failure to comply with a parenting time order; interpretation and modification of an award involving division of retirement accounts; and admission of evidence in settlement negotiations between counsel for the parties. Published decisions that made law in Arizona include the right to inherit from a biological parent despite adoption by stepfather and complex procedural issues in a custody, child support and parenting time case.
